Shree Mahavir Jain Hospital Successfully Conducts Heart Surgery By Tavi On An 88 Year Old Gentleman

Dr. Mayur Jain from Shree Mahavir Jain Hospital has successfully conducted a heart surgery procedure called TAVI on an 88-year-old gentleman. The octogenarian was weak with a history of bypass done in 2004 and paralysis in 2016. He was at high risk for surgical aortic valve replacement. Hence, Dr. Mayur Jain who is trained in TAVI from Cleveland clinic, USA convinced him of a novel treatment where the aortic valve can be replaced without an open heart just through a catheter. Considering the complications of redo open heart surgery and his frail health TAVI was a good option for him.

A Transcatheter aortic valve implantation procedure (TAVI) is less invasive than open-heart surgery. In TAVI there are 2 types of valves. Balloon expanding valve where valve stent system is crimped onto a catheter and Self-expanding valve which has an inbuilt stent-valve system made of nitinol and expands on deployment. This catheter system is inserted from a large artery in the groin and then through the aorta to the heart across the valve. Once a position is confirmed the valve is expanded.

The advantages of TAVI are fewer complications, less blood loss, less anaesthesia, less requirement for ventilator support, early mobilization, and short hospital stay. The patient underwent aortic valve replacement by TAVI at Shree Mahavir Jain Hospital on 16/4/2022 was seen walking with the doctor in the corridor on the next day and was discharged on a 3rd day from the hospital. The scar was only a few mm in the groin. This procedure is no less than a miracle for old-age patients with aortic valve disease.

“It is a great privilege for us to successfully conduct heart surgery on an 88 old patient by TAVI. The novel treatment is one of the greatest innovations in healthcare in the last decade. We hope this treatment brings joy to our old-age patients who don’t want to undergo open-heart surgery for valve replacement. We would love to help such patients with the treatment at the minimum possible cost. Our future goal is to set up TAVI and the paediatrics cardiac Unit.” says Dr. Sunil Katkade, Chief Medical Officer, Shree Mahavir Jain Hospital.

Shree Mahavir Jain Hospital is one of the best in Mumbai for TAVI since it is one of the few hospitals in Mumbai where Cath lab (where angioplasty and TAVI are done) and Cardiac OT (where bypass and valve replacement is done) share a common wall. There is a connecting door between the two. So, if any complains arises in the Cath lab patient can be immediately shifted to OT, and time delay can be avoided thus giving the best results.

Shree Mahavir Jain Hospital (SMJH) is a joint venture of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and JITO Educational and Medical Trust. The hospital thrives to make quality healthcare affordable and accessible to everybody at a nominal cost. Shri Pratap J. Ashar Cardiac Center is well equipped with the most modern Hybrid Cath Lab, state of an art modular Cardiac operation theatre. It also has the most advanced Tread Mill and 2-D Echo and Holter monitoring.
