MGM Healthcare, a multi-quaternary care hospital in Central Chennai has announced that they had successfully performed a mitral valve replacement on a 38-year-old patient for the very first time in India. The surgery was done on 19th February, 2022. The surgery team was led by Dr. AB Gopalamurugan, Senior Consultant of Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology and Director of TAVR & Endovascular Therapy along with Dr. Prashant Vaijyanath and Dr Mohan Senior Consultants and Cardiovascular Surgeons.
The 38-year-old-patient and teacher Mr. Kamal M from Madurai was suffering from severe breathing problems due to mitral valve failure. Mr. Kamal M reached out to MGM Healthcare after a lot of research and multiple consultations in other hospitals. The other hospitals suggested him of metallic valve replacement which he was not willing to be done. He was looking for an alternative without a metallic valve and lifelong blood thinning medications.
Mitral valve failure usually occurs when the valve between the left heart chambers doesn’t close completely, allowing blood to leak backward across the valve. The leakage can be severe and enough blood will not pass through the heart and to the rest of the body, which result in tiredness or short of breath. According to Dr. AB Gopalamurugan, they opted for MITRIS valve tissue for USA as per the patient’s decision not to take lifelong blood thinners. This tissue valve serves the purpose to last longer than the conventional tissue valves thereby allowing younger patients to go through this procedure and maintain a normal life without the need of blood thinners.
